26 people have died in a building fire in Northern China on Thursday.

Just before 7 am, a blaze broke out in the four-story Yongju Coal Company in Lvliang City, Shanxi, injuring at least 38 people.

According to the state media, rescue personnel evacuated 70 people from the building and took 63 others to the hospital.

CCTV reported the fire was under control, and rescue work was continuing Thursday afternoon.

Hongxing News, a local publication, said the fire appeared in a shower area of the building, with offices and dormitories.

Police have taken into custody several people for questioning, said CCTV, as the cause of the fire is under investigation.

President Xi Jinping urges authorities to ensure better safety measures are in place to avoid such incidents.

Coal manufacturers are facing a backlash as this is 1 in a series of accidents that have occurred in recent months. This has affected production as mines stop work for safety inspections.
