The four teenagers had been on a camping trip in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales, when they went missing. Police found their bodies inside an overturned car partly submerged in water.

Jevon Hirst, Harvey Owen, Wilf Henderson and Hugo Morris, all aged between 16 and 18, were on a camping trip in Snowdonia from which they never returned. No one heard from any of them since Sunday morning.

Their disappearance prompted a frantic search that ended on Tuesday evening. Their bodies were inside an upturned silver Ford Fiesta, partially submerged in water. The car went off the road near the village of Garreg, five miles from the town of Porthmadog.

“At present, this appears to have been a tragic accident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the four young men at this very difficult time,” said Supt Owain Llewellyn, of North Wales Police.

“This has been an extensive search involving a number of different agencies and volunteers, and this is sadly not the outcome that any of us would have wanted.”

Nationwide Grief

Crystal Owen, Harvey’s mother, wrote on social media, “I feel like I’m in a nightmare I wish I could wake up from but I’m not.

“I just wanted to say I do appreciate people’s kindness but no amount of messages is going to help me overcome this. Nothing will make this nightmare go away.”

The four teenagers were all from Shrewsbury, where the Town Council cancelled the Christmas light switch-on event.

“Following the tragic news yesterday we have taken the respectful decision to cancel the lights switch-on, scheduled for this evening,” Shrewsbury Town Council stated. “Our thoughts go out to all who are caught up in this terrible tragedy.”

Mark Drakeford, First Minister of Wales, also offered his condolences. “Devastating news,” he wrote. “My thoughts are with their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time as they deal with the unimaginable.”
